Flash edition of the Radar: Anthropic's prospectus reveals its customers are spending nine times more than a year ago. How to control your AI bill.
Flash edition. A follow-up to this morning's Radar. Yesterday we reported that Anthropic admits in its IPO prospectus that it will change prices, limits, and models (Oct 26 flash). Today the most talked-about figure is a different one: how much more each customer spends from one year to the next.
What happened
In the prospectus (Form S-1) filed Monday with the SEC, Anthropic reported a net revenue retention of approximately 900% as of September 30: customers who were already paying a year ago are now paying about nine times more per quarter. The calculation excludes fixed Pro and Max subscriptions (Source). Where it comes from: more than half of its $100,000+ customers use both its developer platform and at least one of its applications, such as Claude Code or Cowork, compared to nearly 30% at the end of 2025. An example: a Claude Enterprise user who does not use Claude Code spends on average less than $75 per month; the top 5% of spenders using Claude Code spend about 20 times that figure.
TechCrunch compares it to Amazon or Uber: get in with one product, then sell the next ones to the same company (TechCrunch). Investor Tomasz Tunguz offers the counterpoint in Axios: there is no guarantee of customer loyalty, as many pay per use without multi-year contracts (Axios).
Why it matters
For an investor, it's the best possible news. For the customer, it's a warning: the AI bill is designed to grow, not because rates are rising, but because each team adds another product and agents consume nonstop. Anthropic also notes that the Fortune 500 companies that are already customers spend on average less than 0.1% of their total expenses on it, and that its ten largest customers on that list spend eight times as much. That headroom comes out of your budget.
What it means for your business
- One budget line per product. Separate API, chat, Claude Code, and Cowork (or their equivalents from another provider) with a designated owner and a monthly cap for each: you will see what is growing and why.
- The expensive agent goes to whoever earns it back. If a seat with a coding tool can cost 20 times more than one with chat, grant it after a one-month trial with measured hours saved, not to the whole team by default.
- Keep the exit open. Save instructions, data, and tests outside the provider's application: adding one product should not tie you to the others.
On the AI First ladder, spending more doesn't move you up a rung: being able to say how much each completed task costs does.
Frequently asked questions
What does a 900% net revenue retention mean?
It compares what customers who were already on board a year ago pay today with what they paid then, accounting for those who left or cut back. 900% is about nine times more.
Is Anthropic going to raise Claude prices?
The prospectus does not announce price hikes: growth comes from increased usage and more products per customer.
Is this a recommendation to invest in Anthropic?
No. This is information for companies using Claude; the date and price of the IPO remain unpublished.
