What it means that Anthropic is launching Claude Duet and Walmart is opening its store to AI agents — October 22, 2026

Flash edition of the Radar: Anthropic launches Claude Duet, an AI agent that works while you are away, and Walmart sets rules for shopping agents.
Flash edition. A follow-up to this morning's Radar. Last night, Anthropic introduced an AI agent that works while you're away, and Walmart published the rules under which it allows agents to shop.
What happened
On Wednesday, October 21, Anthropic opened a preview of Claude Duet, an app for professionals and small businesses. Every morning it summarizes the important updates from your connected applications, checks them every few hours, and continues working on its own virtual machine even if you turn off your laptop. With over 6,000 connectors, it looks for unpaid invoices in QuickBooks or Stripe and drafts the reminder, or prepares the payroll in Gusto. It reads, drafts, and prepares on its own; before sending a message, paying, signing, or deleting anything, it shows you what it's going to do and waits for your approval. It will not trade securities or move money between accounts, even with your permission (Anthropic announcement). For now, it is only for Pro and Max subscribers in the United States, with a waitlist (The Decoder), and competes with Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots (CNBC).
That same Wednesday, Walmart opened Agent Gateway to allow authorized agents to shop in its store. Starting next month, each agent will have its own profile within the customer's account, its purchases shown separately and a spending cap or purchase-by-purchase approval, and Walmart accepts returns even if the agent makes a mistake. Amazon, on the other hand, blocks them (TechCrunch).
Why it matters
An agent maker and a retailer have arrived at the same design from opposite sides: the agent acts alone only on what can be undone, asks for permission for what involves money or signatures, and has its own identity and limits. Anthropic admits that this version "might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent," and its background checks consume the same usage quota as the rest of Claude.
For your business
- Write the table before connecting anything. Three columns per agent: what it does alone (read, draft), what needs your "yes" (send, pay, sign, delete), and what it will never do (move money between accounts).
- One identity and one cap per agent. Its own account and a capped budget, as we covered in the October 8 flash edition; if it buys, use a virtual card and keep its expenses separate from yours.
- Start with what you already do by hand. Two weeks of unpaid invoice reminders, comparing its drafts with yours before letting it send one.
On the AI First ladder, an agent that works while you're away is not UNATTENDED until someone has written down what it does alone, what needs a "yes," and what it will never do.
Frequently asked questions
Can Claude Duet be used in Spain?
Not yet: it is launching in the United States and Anthropic has not given a date for other countries.
How much does Claude Duet cost?
In the preview, it is included in Pro and Max at no extra cost, and it consumes the same usage limit as the rest of Claude.
Can Claude Duet pay for me?
Yes, with your approval: it purchases using Link, Stripe's wallet, which pays with a virtual card without sharing your real number.
