Radar Flash Edition: Anthropic tells investors it generated $16.8B in Q3 and is already profitable. What changes in your AI bill.
Flash edition. In this morning's Radar, we saw that sandboxing agents is now pulling in $750 million funding rounds. Last night the industry's big number landed: how much the company behind Claude is bringing in.
What happened
Anthropic told prospective investors on Wednesday, at its San Francisco headquarters, that revenue hit $16.8 billion between July and September: up 45% from the previous quarter ($11.6 billion) and more than triple the first quarter ($4.7 billion). According to the Financial Times, which broke the story, the company also said it was profitable on an adjusted basis in the quarter, was cash-flow positive, and brought in $1.70 in revenue for every dollar it spent on computing power (Source). The figures come from people familiar with the meeting; Anthropic declined to comment (Source). The IPO is expected in November.
Why it matters
There are two ways to read it. First: growth is slowing. Revenue grew nearly two and a half times from the first quarter to the second; this time it rose 45%. Second: from the outside, we don't know how Anthropic counts. The source didn't say whether the figure is gross or net revenue, or how the company defines profit (Source), and a week ago OpenAI's number shrank by $18 billion for exactly that reason. What is clear is the $1.70 figure: what you buy from Anthropic already earns it a margin over compute, and once it's public, its next quarter will depend on you using more.
For your business
- Measure cost per task, not per invoice. Know what each invoice the AI checks, or each email it answers, actually costs. The monthly total won't tell you which agent is running up the bill.
- Set caps before you let agents loose. A monthly spending limit per API key or per project, with an alert before you hit it. An agent stuck in a retry loop won't warn you.
- Check the default settings. Which model you pick, the reasoning level and caching drive the bill more than the list price does. Try each task on the small model before paying for the big one out of habit.
On the AI First ladder, an agent with no cost per task and no spending cap isn't UNATTENDED: it's a faucet left running.
Frequently asked questions
Will Claude's price go up when Anthropic goes public?
Nothing has been announced. If it brings in $1.70 for every dollar of compute, today's price isn't a loss leader. Its last price move was a cut: on October 7 it halved the price of cache reads on Sonnet 5.5.
Are these official figures?
No. They come from people familiar with the presentation, not from a public document. The IPO prospectus remains confidential.
When will Anthropic go public?
It's expected in November, after the US midterm elections on November 3. There is no official date.
